Bij het kopen van een stethoscoop is het goed om de belangrijkste kenmerken van een stethoscoop te kennen. De belangrijkste: 

Enkelslangs of dubbelslangs

Het verschil tussen een enkelslangs en een dubbelslangs stethoscoop is de capaciteit van de slang om lucht te verplaatsen. Dubbelslangs stethoscopen hebben een dubbel inwendig lumen en kunnen hierdoor meer druk verplaatsen. Bij oudere modellen (bijvoorbeeld Rappaport stethoscoop) werd vaak gebruik gemaakt van twee losse slangen; tegenwoordig wordt het keurig in één slang weggewerkt. De volgende stethoscopen hebben een dergelijk dubbel inwendig lumen:

Afstembaar membraan

Een afstembaar membraan maakt een klok eigenlijk overbodig. De traditionele klok van een stethoscoop is bedoeld om lage frequenties mee te kunnen horen. Bij een stethoscoop met een afstembaar membraan worden lage frequenties hoorbaar door lichte druk op het borststuk (en de huid) uit te oefenen, terwijl hoge frequenties hoorbaar worden wanneer meer druk wordt uitgeoefend.

Klok modus (lage frequenties) Lichte druk op het borststuk maakt laag frequente geluiden hoorbaar.
Membraan modus (hoge frequenties) Met meer druk kunt u de hoog frequente geluiden horen.

Electronische stethoscopen

Sinds enige tijd worden er naast de traditionele akoestische stethoscopen steeds meer electronische stethoscopen gezien. Voordeel van deze stethoscopen is dat het signaal tot maar liefst 24x versterkt kan worden. Omgevings geluiden kunnen met moderne technieken zoals Ambient Noise Reduction (ANR) worden weggefilterd. Maar ook wrijf geluiden die tijdens het ausculteren nog wel eens ontstaan, kunnen met de nieuwere modellen worden weggefilterd. Deze technologie wordt door 3M Littmannn ook wel Frictional Noise Reduction (FNR) genoemd.
